#20: Editorial makeup, speed dating, and maximalist nail art
I don't know that anyone needs to be dating with so much haste
Welcome back to yappa :)
This edition of the newsletter is firmly focused on body decorations and adornments, because your skin suit is yours to customise as you please.
Or just get back into playing sims, it’s up to you.
Enjoy!! <3
The creativity bit:
There’s a special joy in getting ready for an evening or an event. Putting on a little music, making a drink to sip on, deciding on an outfit, maybe even yapping to a friend while you put on makeup in front of the mirror.
I’d even go as far as to say the getting ready part of the night, can sometimes be better than the night itself.
And while I love doing makeup in a ‘getting ready for something’ context, it usually means that I’m not being experimental with it because I don’t have the time for it to go wrong.
However, in a past life I was quite into makeup. So I thought it would be fun to dip my toes back into the water and do some editorial looks again, with no time pressure. Just space to play.
Here’s how it went:
Sorry but I do actually love how this first one turned out and I’m seriously considering bleaching my brows because of it.
2012 tumblr can eat it’s heart out.
Soft, playful, I felt like a butterfly wearing it. If I were to do a variation of this look again I’d like to dip my whole head in sticky gloss at the end.
The life and dating bit:
Okay soooo speed dating, what’s the deal with that?
Well several weeks ago I went to a singles night at a very cool sexy lesbian bar in East London. I went with two friends which I was instantly grateful for because I was hit with a wave of social anxiety when we arrived and saw so many cuties in one spot.
They’d set the place up to be a mix of speed dating in one section, and then general milling about / chatting in the other. We decided we needed a wine before we could be in the ~ zone ~ to talk to about 20 women in quick succession. After we’d had two and loosened up a little we were ready to hit the speed dating section - only to find we’d waited too long and it had finished. I guess next time we’ll need to come mentally prepared for it.
I’ve only done speed dating one other time, several years ago in Naarm / Melbourne. It was hosted by a chic woman and her girlfriend and they posed questions for you to talk about with the person sitting opposite you, 2 mins per question then move on to the next. Stuff like: what’s a dream that you’ve never been able to forget? Are you team Jacob or Edward? Favourite cry in car song?
It was fun, but it’s also a strange manufactured setting in which to flirt.
Also, one bathroom at a lesbian bar??? Diabolical stuff. We spent about 40 minutes queueing, with no end in sight, when a woman behind us holding a fluffy Pomeranian announced to the line that she was going to go outside to piss between two cars and that we should all join. We need movers (and shakers) like this in life.
xx
The fashion bit:
To accessorise or not? There are few times when the answer to this question is no. Accessories show that you’ve put thought into the details, and that you like little trinkets. It’s intentional, it brings it all together and I think nail art is a really underrated way of doing this.
Wearing super long nails is also a strange sensation that mixes a sense of complete impracticality, while elevating you to a higher level of c*ntyness that honestly most of us never achieve.
Here’s some of my favourite artists. Fair warning, they’re all turbo.
Horni Nails - my all time:
Juan Alvear does the nails for a lot of celebrities and my god they’re a lot, but I think they’re a good example that things don’t always need to be pretty to be cool:
You’ll either love it or hate it - Alona Sobolveska:
A moment please for the duality of having the lesbian speed dating segment followed by impractically long nail art. We truly do contain multitudes.
Also!! A good friend of mine and her bestie just started a substack. Highly recommend you check it out - it’s funny, conversational and generally just a joy to read. They have hot takes and correct opinions. I challenge you to read it and not want to be their friends too
See you next time chooks
